What are Industrial Adhesives?

Adhesives are a substance that binds two surfaces together while resisting separation. With industrial applications, adhesives need to be extremely durable and maintain a strong bond over long periods of time. There are many different types of adhesives which correspond directly with their application.

How can they be Applied?

There are many application methods of industrial adhesives based on the size of the area by which the adhesive will be applied. The substance can be applied to one or both materials that are to be bonded together. The two pieces must be aligned and pressure added to improve the adhesion while forcing out air bubbles. The most common methods of application include applicator guns, brushes, films or pellets, rollers or spray guns.

Why are they Important?

Adhesives are important in the industrial sector to ensure when there are equipment problems during manufacturing that the parts can be fixed without requiring an entire overhaul. Types of Industrial Adhesives

The most common types of industrial adhesives include:


Contact adhesives are primarily utilized for strong bonds that boast a high shear-resistance. For instance, bonding a wooden counter or the outsoles with the uppers in footwear utilize contact adhesives. The most commonly utilized contact adhesives are natural rubber and Neoprene.


Drying adhesives consist of solvent-based or emulsion. Solvent-based ingredients dissolve into the solvent and it evaporates, the adhesive hardens. Polymer dispersion adhesives are used in the packaging industries as well as with fabrics and fabric-based components.


Multi-part adhesives bond though the mixing or two or more components when they react. The result is a cross-link between polymers into acrylics, epoxies and urethanes. There are a number of mixtures that produce strongly-bonded adhesion.


Pressure-sensitive adhesives create a bond the application of a small amount of pressure to marry two substrates. They are ideal at balancing the flow and resistance to flow. Therefore, the bond is formed due to the adhesive being soft enough to flow but hard enough to resist flow once pressure is applied.


Finally, synthetic adhesives consist of elastomers, emulsions, thermoplastics and thermosets. The most common examples include: acrylic, acryepoxy, cyanoacrylate and polyurethane.
